I'd enjoyed sex, so I sought that out. The critical looks I got many times in bars didn't do anything to me, when I knew I didn't care about their opinions anyway. I just needed a willing partner for a brief encounter or two. And there was almost always someone I found reasonably attractive who felt the same.

I'd learned confidence in that area, because it was the only way I was going to have anything at all. I'd taught myself not to care too much about anyone's opinion, or let myself get too close emotionally. That had been a hard thing to do for a young wolf.

It would be a shame if I undid it all now, and had to start at the beginning again later, licking my wounds and howling into the night, metaphorically speaking, at least, since I don't actually shift and howl. I don't see the point, really.

"Can I ask you a question?" said Levi, as he was making egg omelets for us one morning.

I tensed. Such questions usually seemed to precede a personal or humiliating inquiry, even from him. "Not sure."

He glanced at me, and smiled. "Ah, sorry. Didn't mean to make it sound ominous. I just wondered if you need a place to shift and run. We can find a place, if you do. I can stand guard or whatever, if you're concerned about being seen." He flipped the omelet with skill, and smiled at his success.

"I don't really like shifting. I almost never do it." I finished my coffee and went to stand beside him, staring hard at the omelet, wanting it to be done so I could eat it. I was starving, as usual in the morning, and it smelled delicious.

"Oh? Why not? I thought that was important." He tipped the cooked egg dish onto the waiting plate and I snatched it, pinching off a hot corner as I walked back to the table. It was really too warm to eat, but I couldn't wait. His voice followed me. "I thought shifting was important?"

I bent over the plate, fork and knife in my hands, and hesitated a moment, letting it cool as I answered him. "It is for some, I guess, but it hurts when I shift, so I don't unless I have to." Like at the doctor's. Like during training, when they made us shift.

He stilled. "It's...not supposed to hurt, is it?" He sounded alarmed.

"No. It's natural, it's easy for most shifters." I thought of how my brothers could go back and forth multiple times a day, laughing, not stressed or hurt at all. Wrestling around in either form, confident in their abilities. They'd reveled in their strength, like the young wolves they were, playful and strong and learning their limits. And mine.

"I'm sorry," he said cautiously. "Did you tell Dr. Jones that during your exam?"

"Of course." I was eating now, and nothing else mattered. He was a good cook. The flavors of butter, perfectly fried onions, and peppers blended with the tender eggs.
